Because of a dense fog that hid him and Willem, Jan Verhooch brought the horses from their jungle pasture and stable near the river directly to the edge of the van der Rhys gardens. Sirena put her finger to her lips in a gesture to be silent as she and Caleb approached the two seamen. And only when the four were at a safe distance from the house, crossing the vast plantation and headed up into the foothills that lay inland, to the south of Batavia, did she speak a word.

“Caleb has studied the maps carefully, Jan. But we’ll all have to be alert if we’re to cross the island and not lose ourselves in these forested foothills or in the jungle we’re sure to meet as we descend toward the sea on the south side of the island.” Turning to Caleb, she asked, “What would be your guess as to when the Spaniard and his accomplice will arrive?”

At the word “accomplice,” Jan’s and Willem’s faces became grim masks: as Dutchmen they realized fully the treachery in which Don Chaezar Alvarez was engaged.

“The Señor travels with a full hold. But the breeze is fresh. If he sails the launch with a half-furled sail he should arrive at Rara Cove—that’s what it’s called on the maps—within three hours. He had, of course, perhaps an hour or two’s start on us. However … if the fog moves out to sea before long, he may be delayed.”

“Aye,” said Willem, turning to look back down toward the plantation and the town. “See how it curls like wisps of smoke and how it moves toward the sea’s edge.”
